01This is the headstock of what I called "The Filthy Animal" a 1946 Gibson ES 150, a very rare guitar. So I decided to refurbish the headstock including the gears because the buttons were shrunken and crumbling. There was so much grime that the gears really didn't move when turning. So I disasembled and scrubed everything until the gears were free and running. I then removed the celloid buttons and installed new reissue plactic buttons. I could have aged the buttons but the customer wanted the guitar to look new and clean. The headstock showed no signs of checking so I used a very fine compound to clean off the oxidation that had built up through the years. I then applied a coat of wax to preserve the finish. After reinstalling the gears, the headstock looks brand new but still original. Replacing rotten buttons is acceptable in the vintage world and does not take away vintage value too much. Next installment-the rest of this 1946 Gibson ES 150......
